Fan-NAS-tic!

Over the last few years I have been playing with Network Attached Storage, NAS for short. A NAS is a bit like a portable HDD but instead of connecting it directly to your computer/device you plug it into your network. The most basic NAS is just storage that connects to your network… beyond that the … Continue reading “Fan-NAS-tic!”

Over the last few years I have been playing with Network Attached Storage, NAS for short. A NAS is a bit like a portable HDD but instead of connecting it directly to your computer/device you plug it into your network.

The most basic NAS is just storage that connects to your network… beyond that the feature list is immense. Here are just a few features I have found really cool.

Subscribing to a Google Calendar

I have touched on how excellent Google Calendars are in my other article, this one is about subscribing to additional Google calendars on your smart-phone (iOS or Android).

My Favourite Android Apps: Llama – Location Profiles

One of my favourite Android Apps at the moment is Llama – Location Profiles. This app utilises the mobile phone towers to identify locations or “Areas”. I have tried similar profile switching programs that use locations determined via the internet or GPS but they either lack the precision or use too much battery. With one … Continue reading “My Favourite Android Apps: Llama – Location Profiles”

One of my favourite Android Apps at the moment is Llama – Location Profiles. This app utilises the mobile phone towers to identify locations or “Areas”. I have tried similar profile switching programs that use locations determined via the internet or GPS but they either lack the precision or use too much battery. With one such app I could be up at the local shops and my phone thought it was still at “Home”.

Shared Google Calendars, where have you been all my life…

If Google calendars, and smart phones, had been around while I was in high school I could have avoided having to pick up rubbish at lunchtimes. <skip all this rubbish and just find out how to do it!>

Mega-Pixel/IP Camera Systems

When we moved to our new premises I decided to install a couple of mega-pixel CCTV cameras. Mega-pixel CCTV cameras are IP based so rather than a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) I can record the footage to my file-server. The other obvious benefit of mega-pixel CCTV cameras is image resolution but there are other benefits … Continue reading “Mega-Pixel/IP Camera Systems”

This post is as much for me as it is for anyone else. This site is “powered” by Joomla, a very powerful, useful and versatile content management system. One of the most versatile aspects of Joomla is the ability to apply templates to your site to change the look and feel at the click of your mouse. One of the free to use templates out there is called “JA Purity II” and you are currently looking at a version of it that I have customised.

Android and e-ink

Last Mother’s Day I… er… my daughter bought her mum a Kindle. I had not been interested in eReaders for myself. I had always assumed that I would end up buying a tablet rather than an eReader. After playing with my wife’s Kindle (does that sound dirty?) I found that I really like e-ink screens … Continue reading “Android and e-ink”

Last Mother’s Day I… er… my daughter bought her mum a Kindle. I had not been interested in eReaders for myself. I had always assumed that I would end up buying a tablet rather than an eReader. After playing with my wife’s Kindle (does that sound dirty?) I found that I really like e-ink screens for readability and battery life. I wondered if there were any eReaders based on Android that I could hack to create an e-ink tablet.
